Today, a Saudi medical team succeeded in performing a rare surgery - the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia - that was performed by laparoscopy on a patient suffering from scoliosis in the (King Abdulaziz University Hospital) in Jeddah. The professor of orthopedics and spine surgery at the University Hospital, and the head of the medical team that performed the elective operation, said
R. Muhammad Jalal Al-Sayyad said in a press statement: The 13-year-old patient was suffering from a spinal curvature of 85 degrees, which is a rare case of injury of this size. He explained: What is followed in such operations is to incise the rib cage using a large incision. To release the cartilage between the vertebrae of the spine, which leads to an increase in its flexibility, and facilitates the adjustment of warp, and this incision affects the mechanics of the rib cage, and leads to excruciating pain after the operation, in addition to distorting the shape of the chest. Dr. Al-Sayyad said: What is new about the operation that was performed on this patient, is to replace the chest incision, using a laparoscope, with incisions not exceeding one centimeter, and without removing any rib, which results in the surgery without pain, the high speed of recovery, and the absence of distortion of the skin of the cage. thoracic; He added: The new operation was able to prevent any bleeding that negatively affects the mechanics of the rib cage, preserve the full ability to release cartilage, and increase the flexibility of the spine, through a metal posterior fixation, with bone grafting. Finally, Dr. Al-Sayyad pointed out that this modern surgical technique, which was applied in this operation, is only used in very limited centers in the world.
